Driving Guide in the Philippines

Essential information for foreign drivers renting motorcycles in the Philippines.

Foreign License Holder

International Driving License (IDL) is not a requirement.

Foreign driving license holders can drive up to 3 months in the country without necessary additional requirements. After 3 months, you need to get a local driving permit.

Tollways or Expressways [Important]

There is a minimum of 400cc to enter expressways / tollways. However expressways are only present when going out of Metro Manila. Expressways cut 1 hour of travel time on average.

If you are using below 400cc bikes, we suggest turning off the expressway option on your google maps. Our personnel can help you with this.

Taking Ferry or RoRo (roll-on, roll-off)

You only need to show the photocopy of the Official receipt of motorbike, registration paper, and the Motorent Manila Booking Email to be allowed. We will provide all these documents.

There is no need for pre-booking for the motorcycle ferry spots as these are booked on the spot at the port. Only selected ferries have online booking.

Navigation

Google maps works very well in the country.

If you are using below 400cc bikes, we suggest turning off the expressway option on your google maps. Our personnel can help you with this.

Safety

Motorcycle theft is not common in the country. But we provide free disc locks upon request.

Always wear a helmet.

Phone / SIM Card

We recommend getting a local prepaid SIM card when you arrive. They are available at the airport and convenience stores (7-Eleven, Ministop). We recommend Smart or Globe Telecom.

A local SIM gives you mobile data for Google Maps navigation and the ability to call us anytime during your trip. Top-up (load) is available everywhere.

Police Checkpoints

Police checkpoints are common, especially at night and on provincial roads. This is normal β€” just slow down and stop when flagged.

Always carry your passport (or a photocopy), your driving license, and the motorcycle documents we provide. Officers may ask to see these. Stay calm and cooperative.
